چکیده

This paper describes a corpus-based study addressing the spatial positioning of hands in Italian Sign Language (LIS). The corpus includes LIS sentences extracted from TV news concerning weather forecasting. The results shows that spatial relations depend on contextual and geographical features. These results have been exploited in the implementation of a planning module that generates a sequence of commands that drive the generator of a virtual character. The planner is part of an Italian to LIS translation system whose goal is the automatic translation of weather forecast programs.

The Phonetics of Head and Body Movement in the Realization of American Sign Language Signs

BACKGROUND/AIMS Because the primary articulators for sign languages are the hands, sign phonology and phonetics have focused mainly on them and treated other articulators as passive targets. However, there is abundant research on the role of nonmanual articulators in sign language grammar and prosody. The current study examines how hand and head/body movements are coordinated to realize phoneti...

Estimation of Hand Skeletal Postures by Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Hand posture estimation attracts researchers because of its many applications. Hand posture recognition systems simulate the hand postures by using mathematical algorithms. Convolutional neural networks have provided the best results in the hand posture recognition so far. In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the hand skeletal posture by using deep convolutional neural networks. T...

A Framework for Sign Language Recognition using Support Vector Machines and Active Learning for Skin Segmentation and Boosted Temporal Sub-units

This dissertation describes new techniques that can be used in a sign language recognition (SLR) system, and more generally in human gesture systems. Any SLR system consists of three main components: Skin detector, Tracker, and Recognizer. The skin detector is responsible for segmenting skin objects like the face and hands from video frames. The tracker keeps track of the hand location (more sp...

The Eye of the Beholder Automatic recognition of Dutch sign language

Preface For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in languages. Sign languages especially fascinate me, because they are natural languages using a different modality: sign languages use images as the vehicle for information. This has strange implications: in sign language, it is easy to have a conversation with someone at the other side of a crowded room. On the other hand, it is im...

Fothcoming in Philosophical Studies PROBLEMS FOR DOGMATISM

Looking at the end of my arms, there appear to be some hands. Am I thereby justified in believing that these are hands? That depends. We can imagine possible scenarios in which it falsely appears to me that I have hands. Perhaps I'm a handless brain-in-a-vat artificially being fed experiences as of a couple of hands before me. Or perhaps my hands have been amputated and replaced by plastic repl...
